The history of Tyrolean Airways cannot be told in isolation from Austrian aviation history as a whole. Throughout its existence, the Innsbruck-based airline was closely interwoven with other Austrian airports and airlines, sometimes as a partner, sometimes as a competitor, sometimes as the successor to smaller regional carriers. This section of the website gathers the chapters of this wider story.
The Airports
Every Austrian airport has its own history, often spanning more than 100 years, and each has, in its own way, helped shape the development of Austrian aviation.
- Innsbruck Airport: Tyrolean Airways’ home airport, shaped by its demanding alpine location
- Vienna International Airport: Austria’s hub and most important partner airport
- The Regional Airports: Salzburg, Graz, Klagenfurt, and the history of Rheintalflug
The Airlines
Alongside Tyrolean Airways, other Austrian airlines shaped the skies over Austria, some as sister companies within the group, others as independent competitors.
- Austrian Airlines: the parent company, formed in 1957/58 from the merger of two politically differently aligned predecessor projects
- Lauda Air: Niki Lauda’s airline, Austria’s second scheduled carrier and later an Austrian subsidiary
The Aircraft
Technical history is part of the story: which aircraft types shaped Austrian regional air travel, and why?
And More
This section is continually being expanded with further chapters, for example on other airports, historical airlines and notable events in Austrian aviation history.
