Air Sylhet: History

Air Sylhet was an airline funded by the British Bangladeshi Sylheti community that set up its Austrian subsidiary with an AOC at Vienna Airport, only to fail again after just one month of scheduled flying in 2009.

An Airline between London, Vienna and South Asia

Air Sylhet plc was founded in London in 2007 by British businessmen with roots in Bangladesh’s Sylhet region, funded with more than £1 million raised mainly within the local Sylheti community. Its Austrian subsidiary, Air Sylhet AG, received its air operator’s certificate and operating licence on 29 May 2008, based at Vienna International Airport, where a Boeing 757-200 leased from Gadair European Airlines was also stationed.

One Month of Scheduled Flying, Then the End

On 4 April 2009, Air Sylhet launched its only scheduled route, from Birmingham to Amritsar in India with a technical stop in Vienna. After barely a month, by late May 2009, the route had to be suspended for lack of commercial success, and the young airline ended its flight operations entirely.
